Your LinkedIn profile can help you find your next job. But, do not say you are open for opportunities on your LinkedIn profile.

Here are some tips for creating and using your LinkedIn Profile.

1) Use the heading to highlight your job title and key skills. Take advantage of the 140 characters.

2) Show your passion for a field, a project or a mission through the summary. Use “I” unlike your resume. Talk about a few accomplishments. List your skills. If you are a business and provide a product or service, list some testimonials.

3) Get two to three references. Getting friends or colleagues to check off the list of skills endorsements is virtually worthless. Anyone can check off a skill. But only people who know you well can and will write a glowing recommendation.

4) Use a professional photograph – no selfies, please!

5) NEVER say you are open to new opportunities or looking for the next challenge in your profile. Instead, use your privacy settings/jobs seeking preferences/let recruiters know. You can open your profile to be searched by recruiters and search firms so they know you are looking. Never say so on the profile itself.
