If you have been laid off, or furloughed, or if your industry has shut down, what can you do now to prepare for your job search after quarantine?  Here are some practical things to do:

1) Spend 10 minutes each day thinking about one aspect of your job search – Who were your former colleagues?  Where would you like to work?  What are your best skills?  Then sleep on it over night.  The next day you will come up with some answers.

2) Make  list of companies where you would like to work.  Think out of the box, if you are in for-profit, think of nonprofit.  If you are in nonprofit, think of for-profit.  Think of companies that encourage working remotely.

3) Make a list of your contacts – friends, family, former colleagues, former supervisors, personal lawyer, accountant, trainer, dog walker, baby sitter, hair dresser, barber.

4) Re-connect with one person you have not seen or heard from in a long time.  That could be a long-lost friend, former co-worker, or alum from your high school, college or graduate school.

5) Craft your pitch – Your 30 second to 2 minute introduction to you should include your job target, skills, at least one accomplishment, and what distinguishes you from the next candidate.

Remember: You are the manager of your job search.  It’s okay to mourn  a job loss, but then you need to start doing ONE thing each day to get going.(c) 2020 Amy Geffen All rights reserved.
