Despite the staggering number of layoffs, there are fields that are still hiring.  Here are some concrete steps you can take now to keep your job search on track:
1) Research new fields that are growing such as Software Tech, Telemedicine, Utilities,  There are openings for peopole in roles such as customer support, business analyst, data analyst, project manager, editor, change management and project manager.
2) Re-connect with your network and expand to new people  Now is the time people are looking for connections and emotional support.  Stay in touch with family, friends and former colleagues.  Expand your network by reaching out to alumni from your high school, college or graduate school.  Get connected on LinkedIn and plan for a phone call to catch up on old times and new issues.  Then you may ask for introductions to people in companies where you would like to work and for the names of organizations that you should add to your job target list.
3) Volunteer – Be of service to your community or non-profits that can use your skills now.  By volunteering you keep your skills sharp and get references and a job to put on your resume during this time.  You may find opportunities to use your skills at a variety of for-profit and non-profit organizations  such as Taproot Foundation; public libraries;  local hospital; VolunteerMatch; CatchFire;
4) Re- write your resume now highlighting skills that are needed now in the workplace.  Go through your past work history and accomplishments to find the actions you took and skills you used that are relevant now.  Re-write those accomplishments to highlight the key words hiring managers are looking for.
5) Practice your interview skills to get ready for the SKYPE or ZOOM interview.  Set up a quiet space in your home without distractions.  Keep the background netutral such as a blank wall or a bookcase.  If not, use the images provided by ZOOM or add your own as a backdrop.  Dress as you would for a live interview. Practice aloud in front of a mirror and then record yourself on your phone and listen to your voice. Videotape yourself to watch for gestures, facial expressions.  Practice. Practice Practice.
This is not the time to be complacent.  Stay in the game, get unstuck, and spend what free time you have after family and chores to keep your job search on track.
