So you took the summer off…I hope you enjoyed yourself, because if you have not been looking for a job you missed the best time to look.  With fewer candidates looking, your chances of getting an interview are greater.
Not to worry, There are still plenty of ways to move forward in your job search. Here are 5 more ways to move you closer to the job you want:
1) Make sure your resume has accomplishments and results -NOT job descriptions. How do you add value?  Job descriptions make you look like everyone else.  They do not distringuish you from your competition.  Job descriptions make you look average, ordinary and boring.  And they do not say what you can do for the company.
2) Write directly to hiring managers – DON’T just answer ads on the internet.  1,000 people answer every ad  and there are only 10% of jobs advertised online so therefore you have a one in 10,000 chance of getting a job from online job postings.   Instead, write directly to companies.
3) Do your research – not just on LinkedIn. Dig into the company website deeper to find the articles that talk about their problems and challenges, not their recent successes. Get the inside scoop by talking to people in the company who know what is going on behind the scenes, not just what is on the website. Figure out how you can help solve their problems.
4)Start networking in earnest – NOT just handing out your card..Meet people for one on ones, coffee, lunch, or chat by phone to learn more about what they do and what problems their companies face.  Don’t know where or how to network?  A job coach can help.
5) Getting stuck?  Talk to a friend, colleague or a career coach – who can give you tips and get you unstuck…if you have not been getting any responses to your resume or follow-ups after the interview you need to do something different.  That is where a certified coach can help move you closer to the job you want.
